How to Analyze Competitors Using Google Reviews
A step-by-step method for reading your competitors' Google reviews, spotting patterns in praise and complaints, and turning them into changes you can make this week.

Your competitors' Google reviews are public, current and written by the exact customers you want. Reading them properly is one of the cheapest forms of market research a local business can do. This is the method, whether you do it by hand or with a tool.
Step 1: Pick the right competitors
Choose 3 to 5 businesses that customers actually compare you with: same type of business, same area. Include the one that always seems busy and one that is similar in size to yours.
Step 2: Read the low-star reviews first
Sort by lowest rating. One-star and two-star reviews tell you what really goes wrong, in the customer's own words. Write each complaint as a short theme, such as 'slow service', 'price higher than quoted' or 'hard to book'.
Step 3: Read the five-star reviews for what wins
Do the same for the best reviews. What do people thank them for? Often it is not the main service. It is being on time, being kind, or explaining things clearly.
Step 4: Count the themes
A single complaint is noise. The same complaint across several reviews, or across several competitors, is a pattern. Tally how many times each theme appears.
Step 5: Find the gap
A gap is a complaint that appears in competitors' reviews and that you could do better. If customers across your area complain about slow service, and you can be fast, that is an opening. Tell people about it on your Google profile, website and in replies.
Step 6: Compare against your own reviews
Run the same process on your own reviews. Where do you already beat the competition? Where do you share their weaknesses? Be honest. The goal is a short list of changes.
Step 7: Turn it into actions
- Pick the one or two gaps that matter most
- Decide what to change this week, and who owns it
- Update your listing and replies to reflect it
- Re-check in a month
